Lubbock Code Enforcement investigates abandoned apartment complex

LUBBOCK, Texas — Lubbock’s Code Enforcement Department investigated an abandoned apartment near 74th Street and Avenue X after they received multiple reports of code violations about the property. Code officer, Coy Humphries, talked about the kinds of complaints they received.

“Our number one complaint is that it’s been open and accessible and that there have been vagrants coming and going from it,” Humphries said.

When Humphries and his team arrived, there were already a few squatters in the apartment. They called the police department to help them make sure everything was safe.

The apartment was easily accessible, and Humphries described the property as severely damaged with trash and debris everywhere. Humphries also saw signs of deliberate destruction.

“It’s unusual for us to be dealing with an open and accessible apartment unit, like this. Usually, apartment issues are tenants having complaints,” Humphries said. “So this is a unique situation dealing with an open and accessible and abandoned apartment unit. So it comes with some new unique challenges because some of the other units are occupied which is part of our concern here.”
