A 57-year-old man reportedly told another person that he shot and killed a man who had been missing since at least mid-August, then hid his body, according to court documents.

Armando Champion, 57, was booked Tuesday into the Lubbock County Detention Center in connection with the suspected death of 54-year-old Elmo Minjarez, Jr.

His arrest comes about a week after investigators with the Lubbock Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit found human remains at a property south of Lubbock.

Police officials said Tuesday that investigators are still working on identifying the remains.

The case began on Sept. 12, while detectives with the Metro unit learned of a possible homicide involving Minjarez while investigating an unrelated homicide.

Witnesses reportedly told detectives they believe Minjarez was shot and killed.

However, the documents do not disclose a reason for the killing.

Minjarez’s family members told detectives they last saw him on Aug. 16.
