Lubbock County moves to online-only jury registration as cost-saving measure

Reporting for jury service in Lubbock County will now be online-only, officials confirmed this week.

Lubbock County District Clerk Sara Smith said residents summoned for jury service should expect to receive a post card directing them to go online to fill out a jury-eligibility questionnaire.

The questionnaire used to be included in the old summonses and could be filled in and mailed back.

Smith said the elimination of the paper questionnaire streamlines the county’s jury registration system that involves mailing about 1,400 summonses a week.

Smith said the change to the system also saves the county the cost of printing and mailing the larger summonses.

“The new postcard will save Lubbock County between $8,000 and $10,000 annually on postage and will also save on production costs,” according to a news release from the District Clerk’s office.

However, the new process does requires residents to have access to a computer or a smartphone with internet access.

Residents without those devices can come to the Central Jury pool room at 1302 Crickets Ave. and use computers there to answer the questionnaire, Smith said.
