Lubbock City Council approves debt funding for Canyon Lake 7

Lubbock is one step closer to constructing its seventh Canyon Lake.

The Lubbock City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved the publication of a notice of intent to issue $66 million in bond debt for water and wastewater projects, including funding for land purchases and design work for the future Canyon Lake 7, which officials estimated will provide 10 million gallons a day to the city’s water supply and become a recreation hub for the Hub City.

The debt will be repaid with water and wastewater revenue.

Other projects that will be funded by the bonds include a water system expansion in west Lubbock, a sewer system expansion in southwest Lubbock, extension of a water line in east Lubbock, a pump station and repairs to equipment at the Southeast Water Reclamation Plant.

Lake 7, which will be located just west of Buffalo Springs Lake, will offer the city a way to reuse treated wastewater. The stream-quality wastewater would be discharged into Lake 7, returning it to Lubbock’s water supply. The majority of the water in the 20,000-acre-foot lake is expected to be treated and discharged wastewater.
