Honoring Victims: Domestic violence homicides in the South Plains

LUBBOCK, Texas — On average, 24 people per minute are victims of rape, physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner in the United States, according to the National Domestic Violence Hotline.

For Domestic Violence Awareness Month this October, EverythingLubbock.com is honoring victims of partner homicide in the South Plains in 2023.

Resources in Lubbock for victims of sexual crimes

A Texas nonprofit dedicated to domestic violence prevention reports on Texas women and men killed by their intimate partners each year, to call for systemic and cultural change. Overall, 64 counties in Texas experienced at least one domestic violence homicide in 2023, according to the Texas Council on Family Violence in its annual Honoring Texas Victims Report.

    • Lakaria Moore , 18, was shot dead by her boyfriend, Christopher Carter, 40, on May 21, 2023. She was initially reported missing after leaving a party with Carter and was found deceased in his abandoned vehicle in Lubbock County.
