Opinion: Jordan: Lubbock County Expo Center making progress, needs support

Most people remember the movie “Field of Dreams” and the famous statement, “If you build it, they will come.”

That statement is so true, and as we continue raising money for the Lubbock County Expo Center (LCEC), we often say, “In order to build it, we must fund.” Many know the Expo Center is a public/private venture involving no county resident taxpayer dollars at any level. The public side funding is financially supported by the two percent Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) that voters overwhelmingly approved in November 2018. Tax collections to date plus net bond proceeds, project approximately $40 million to the project.

As we enter year six since the approval of the 2 percent HOT approval by voters, many have become frustrated – even wondering if this grand venture will ever come to fruition. The answer is a resounding YES, but much sooner with continued monetary assistance on the private side of fundraising for LCEC, a 501(c)3 Board. A board made up entirely of volunteers who have tirelessly worked to raise money to begin construction.
