Self-defense claim made during murder trial for deadly Central Lubbock shooting

LUBBOCK Texas — Opening statements for the murder trial of Julio Gutierrez, 33, began on Tuesday. Gutierrez was accused of shooting and killing Thomas Richardson, 29, back in July of 2022.

EverythingLubbock.com previously reported police were called to the 2700 block of 42nd Street at 12:27 a.m. on July 30 for reports of a disturbance. Police said it appeared that Gutierrez and Richardson got in at argument, resulting in the deadly shooting.

A probable cause affidavit stated, “A witness described that she heard two men fighting earlier in the evening and heard one subject tell the other one that he was going to kill him prior to hearing one gunshot.”

Prosecutor Austin Sanford during opening statements recounted Gutierrez’s 911 call. He said Gutierrez called 911 and calmly said, “I just killed somebody.”
