Broadway brick controversy: Lubbock businesses split over Prop A

LUBBOCK, Texas – As voters in Lubbock prepare to weigh in on Proposition A this November, local business owners along Broadway are divided over the potential changes it could bring. The proposition would fund repairs to the iconic brick-paved street, but opinions are split.

Ish Hernandez, owner of Broadway Barbershop, opposes the construction, fearing it would hurt his business.

“There’s other stuff in Lubbock that needs to be fixed. Leave the bricks alone right now,” Hernandez said.

Hernandez worries the project will disrupt customer access, comparing it to past roadwork on 19th Street that some of his clients have described as a “nightmare.”

On the other hand, Robert Vitela, owner of Giorgio’s Pizza next door, supports the repairs, citing safety concerns for his customers.

“The bricks get loose… it’s a little hazardous,” Vitela said. He believes updating the street is necessary as the city grows and changes.
