New Year’s firework celebrations pose challenges for PTSD-affected veterans in Lubbock

LUBBOCK, Texas — New Year’s Eve fireworks could cause veterans who suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder to be triggered. One local veteran, retired Navy Commander Scott Anderson, gave a few tips as to what veterans could do to cope when fireworks going off may be a trigger.

“Stay inside, put on some music or some noise that can drown out that sound and use some of those tools they have to help ground yourself and help yourself realize you’re in a safe place,” Anderson said.

Anderson himself suffered from PTSD. Anderson served in the US Navy for 32 years; in 2004, he was deployed to Iraq as a part of the ‘Seabees,’ where he experienced combat.

“We were conducting our survey, and our convoy security teams set up security around the vehicles. I was off; I was just walking into one of the school’s classrooms. It was a teacher and a couple of students in there, and suddenly, I heard two explosions,” Anderson said.
