Family seeks answers after fatal shooting in Lorenzo by a Crosby County Deputy

CROSBY CO., Texas — A fatal shooting that occurred after a confrontation with a Crosby County Sheriff’s Deputy in Lorenzo has left a family searching for answers.

The incident took place at about 7:53 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 28, when a Crosby County Sheriff’s Deputy tried to stop a red BMW driven by 27-year-old Michael McGale Phillips Jr., also known as Mikey.

Phillips did not stop, and a short pursuit followed, ending at his home.

When the deputy tried to arrest Phillips, he resisted. The deputy used a TASER twice to try to control the situation, however, it escalated when a passenger from the vehicle started interfering with the arrest. A fight broke out, and the deputy shot Phillips.

The deputy called for emergency medical help, and with assistance from a Crosbyton Police Officer, helped Phillips until paramedics arrived. Phillips was taken to University Medical Center in Lubbock, where he died on January 2.
