South Lubbock daycare confirms measles cases, works to stop the spread

LUBBOCK, Texas — Tiny Tots U Learning Academy on University Avenue confirmed its first case of measles in a child they take care of on March 24; since then, it had grown to several confirmed cases. The measles cases were being found in unvaccinated children and some who had received the first dose of the MMR vaccine.

The co-owner of that location, Maegan Messick, immediately notified the Lubbock health department. Dr. Katherine Wells, the Director of Public Health, commented on working with Tiny Tots during their situation.

“Originally when we saw the cases, they were all in the same class, but as soon as we saw a case in another class, that means that we’re looking at everybody in the center as an exposure, and that’s why we had to pivot and make that change in recommendation of children that are unvaccinated um to be sent home,” Dr. Wells said.

Tiny Tots remained open but had been taking multiple precautions at the daycare to prevent the spread from growing.

“Any children that have an affidavit for not vaccinating their child. So, for whatever reason- religion, health, any of their reasonings, if they have that in place, those children have to be excluded from care for 21 days. Any children that are too young to receive the MMR vaccine, so under six months, we’ve isolated them. So, they’re all together in a classroom, the same classroom with the same consistent teachers,” Messick said…
