Rare April winter weather system to bring snow, icy conditions to West Texas

A rare April winter weather system was expected to bring snow and icy conditions to much of the Panhandle-South Plains and eastern New Mexico Saturday, prompting a number of event cancellations around the region.

A winter storm warning was in effect for much of the Panhandle, including Amarillo, and northwestern South Plains from 1 a.m. Saturday through 1 a.m. Sunday, with moderate to heavy snowfall. Accumulations of 4 inches, with localized snowfall ranging from 6 to 7 inches, are expected. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph are also in the forecast.

“The strong winds and weight of snow on tree limbs may down power lines and could cause sporadic power outages,” reads a statement from the National Weather Service in Lubbock. “Plan on slippery road conditions. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches.”…
