LUBBOCK, Texas — Sunday marked one year since 23-year-old Alex Castanon was killed by a drunk driver in a crash on Highway 87 and the 1585 overpass . His longtime girlfriend, Mireya Ocegueda said the pain is still there every day knowing he should be here.

“It’s crazy to see and think that the world keeps moving while we are stuck on the day that he left us,” Ocegueda said. “It’s not that it’s hurting less, it’s more that I’m learning how to live with it and cope with it.”
Ocegueda and her family have a memorial for Castanon near the 1585 overpass where friends and family can visit since Castanon is buried in Mexico.

“I know he would be proud of me overall because I’m continuing to move along even though I don’t want to. Because like I said, it’s not an easy thing to do,” Ocegueda said. “Why would you want to move on from a person who was just the most wonderful person you could ever have met?”
The two had big plans for their future — both of them pursuing careers in nursing. They had also talked about moving in together, marriage, and starting their own family…
