Earthquake in Lubbock? 5.4 magnitude quake shakes New Mexico, West Texas late Saturday

Folks in West Texas and New Mexico may have felt the earth shake Saturday night.

A 5.4 magnitude earthquake shook much of West Texas and New Mexico late Saturday, May 3, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The earthquake occurred around 8:47 p.m. CT, nearly 35 miles west of Whites City, New Mexico, which is about 149 miles east of El Paso or 200 miles southwest of Lubbock.

The earthquake struck at a depth of 6.3 kilometers, and some strong shaking could be felt in the immediate area, according to the USGS. Soon after the 5.4 magnitude quake, two others earthquakes with a magnitude of 2.9 hit in the same area…
