Lubbock ISD expands culinary program with $290M bond funds

LUBBOCK, Texas — Lubbock ISD’s $290 million bond passed this weekend, and some of that money will go toward upgrades for the district’s culinary arts program.

A total of $47 million has been allocated for academic programming. This funding will be used for renovations to the middle school auditorium and improvements to the fine arts and science labs at Atkins Middle School. Additionally, the allocation will support expansions of the culinary arts, health professions, and advanced welding programs at the Byron Martin Advanced Technology Center.

LISD Chef instructor David Gooch worked for the Culinary Arts Program for almost seven years. Gooch stated that program funds were so scarce before the bond that he had to turn down students who wanted to join Lubbock ISD’s Advanced Technology Center’s Culinary Arts Program.

“We just have to say sorry to a lot of the kids,” Gooch stated. “…This next school year will be the first year that we don’t have to turn away kids to join my program.”…
