Wolfforth swaps fireworks for drones in annual ‘4th on the 5th’ celebration

LUBBOCK, Texas– The City of Wolfforth is keeping tradition alive with its annual “4th on the 5th” Independence Day celebration, but this year, there’s a modern twist lighting up the night sky.

Long known for its massive fireworks display, the city is trading in explosives for innovation with its first-ever drone light show. The change comes as the event continues to grow, attracting thousands more attendees each year.

“You got together with your friends at the park and you hung out, you did some fireworks and it was a very close community,” said Kimberlea Groves, Development Administrative Assistant for the City of Wolfforth. “Word got out that Wolfforth does a spectacular show. And so we expected to be around 8,000 people in attendance, and it went up to about 11,000 people last year. It was a big jump.”

With the celebration outgrowing its traditional home at Patterson Park, the city has moved the festivities to Frenship ISD’s Peoples Bank Stadium, a larger, more accommodating space, but one that lacks the room needed for a fireworks display…
