Food for Thought: Top performers at the flea market

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Each week, Lubbock food inspectors are checking out restaurants big and small to make sure they’re safe.

This week, we have some top performers at the flea market, but a couple of sit-down spots are at the bottom of the list.

George’s Restaurant at 6914 82nd had 18 violations.

  • Hot dogs were above the safe cold temperature of 41 degrees.
  • Raw fish was stored above ready-to-eat salad and cheese.
  • The dish washer was not sanitizing.
  • The can opener blade was dirty.
  • An employee walked in through the back door and started food prep without washing their hands.
  • The lid on the sugar bin was cracked. And a food container was chipped.
  • The reach-in cooler did not have the proper type of gasket.

  • Frozen chicken fried steaks, frozen potato products, and frozen breaded chicken were stored in the reach in freezers without lids, covers, or wrappings .
  • Single-use coffee and tea packs were stored in shelves at at the front counter uncovered.
  • Frozen hash browns were thawing on a pan on a storage rack in the prep area for less than 4 hours.
  • Staff was stacking freshly washed pans without air drying.
  • A lid over container of food was visibly soiled on the outside of the lid.
  • Shelves and racks with food service item storage are visibly soiled.
  • The outer door handle/latch on the walk-in cooler was visibly soiled.
  • Two fans in the prep area on prep tables are visibly dusty.
  • Personal items, a purse and cellphone, were stored on the shelf over the reach-in freezer.
  • Ceiling in the prep area was visibly dusty.
