100 Black Men of West Texas to host annual fishing derby at Mae Simmons Lake

LUBBOCK, Texas — The 100 Black Men of West Texas are preparing for their next community outreach event. The organization will be the hosts for this year’s Charles and Rose Hankson Fishing Derby.

The event has been a Lubbock staple for the past 29 years and encourages members of the community to come together over food, fun and fellowship. This year’s festivities will be held at Mae Simmons Lake, 1701 Canyon Lake Drive, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on July 19.

100BMWT member and chair of the fishing derby, Scotty Scott, spoke with EverythingLubbock.com about the importance of the event and what people can expect from this year’s incarnation. “It’s another community event,” Scott said, “Just a way to bring families, kids and everyone together.” Scott continued, “We do our best to honor him [Charles Hankson] to the utmost and bring this community together in a way its not been brought together before.”

In addition to all the fishing fun, free food will be provided, as well as prizes for a numerous amount of categories. Furthermore, those who cannot attend can still support by donating items, such as fishing equipment. Those who are interested are encouraged to come out to Mae Simmons Lake this weekend and take part in a Lubbock tradition…
