More storms, less heat

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – After a hot weekend, Lubbock peaked at 98° Saturday and 101° Sunday, a slight pattern change allowed showers and thunderstorms to dot the South Plains this morning. That same pattern change is expected to bring another round of spotty storms and showers to the area later today.

The next couple of days will bring more of the same. A slight chance of early morning showers, then a chance of late afternoon and evening thunderstorms. The severe threat will remain very low. Some storms, however, will be efficient rain producers. Road and street flooding is possible. Some strong wind gusts, too, are possible.

The pattern change also will result in slightly less hot afternoons. Still, each of the next few afternoons will be hot. Lubbock’s late July through early August average high is 94°. For the period record highs are around 105°, ranging from 102 to 108°.

Lubbock’s all-time record high is 114°, recorded June 27, 1994.

Following this morning’s scattered thunderstorms and showers, a mostly sunny sky returns through early afternoon. Late afternoon will bring increasing clouds, of which some will develop into hit ‘n’ miss thunderstorms and showers. Locally heavy rain and strong wind gusts are possible. Watch for flooding of roads and streets…
