Lubbock man assaults officer while evading arrest at Home Depot; Court docs

LUBBOCK, Texas — On Wednesday, the Texas Department of Public Safety arrested Trey Staats, 32, related to an incident at a Lubbock home improvement supplies store.

A probable cause affidavit said DPS Criminal Investigations Division Special Agents were conducting a retail theft investigation at the Home Depot on 50th Street, where a suspect, later identified as Staats, had beenseen taking two weed eaters and leaving without paying for them. After being confronted by an officer, Staats dropped the weed eaters and drove off in his vehicle. The affidavit accused Staats of striking the officer with the open driver side door while reversing. He then left the scene.

The affidavit said Staats was headed down 50th Street and Avenue U when he switched spots with a female passenger as DPS conducted a traffic stop. Staats was taken in the custody. Two blue pills identified as Fentanyl were found in the vehicle as well as THC, the affidavit said. Staats requested EMS, was cleared from University Medical Center and taken to the Lubbock County Detention Center.

Staats was booked on bonds totaling $60,500…
