LUBBOCK, Texas — Texas Tech secured another preseason honor, as sophomore running back Quinten Joyner was selected to the Doak Walker Award watch list by the PwC SMU Athletic Forum. The award is presented annually to the best running back in the country and is named after SMU legend and Heisman Trophy winner, Doak Walker.
Joyner is entering his first season with the Red Raiders after spending the last two years at USC. Brought in as a member of this off-season’s strong transfer class, he is expected to be one of the replacements for Texas Tech standout, Tahj Brooks. In a notable twist, Brooks and Joyner attended the same high school, Manor High School, which is outside of Austin.

While in the backfield for the Trojans last season, Joyner tallied 478 rushing yards and three touchdowns, ranking as the team’s second-leading rusher. In addition, he caught 12 passes for 89 yards and a touchdown, which totaled over 500 all-purpose yards and ranked Joyner fourth on the team in the statistic. Despite being at USC for two seasons, Joyner opted to ‘redshirt’ his first year, granting him the potential to remain at Texas Tech for three seasons.
The aforementioned forum will release an updated list of ten semifinalists and a finalist list of three honorees in November. The winner of the Doak Walker Award will ultimately be announced live at the College Football Awards show in December, with Joyner looking to have his named called at the event…
