It’s that time again—summer’s wrapping up, backpacks are being packed, and yellow buses are about to hit the streets. And with that comes a very important reminder from the Texas Department of Transportation: let’s all Drive Kind. Drive Smart.
The Campaign
As Lubbock kids head back to class, TxDOT is launching its Back to School Safety Campaign to keep students safe in school zones and around buses. With a little patience, attention, and common courtesy, we can all do our part to make this school year a safe one.
Let’s Talk Facts
In 2024, there were 781 crashes in school zones and 2,480 wrecks involving school buses across Texas. Most were caused by distracted or impatient drivers—something that’s 100% preventable. Sadly, 13 lives were lost, including two in school zones and eleven in bus-related crashes.
That’s why TxDOT is urging drivers to be extra cautious, especially in the mornings and afternoons when traffic around schools is heaviest.
Things To Keep in Mind
- Obey flashing school zone lights. Those reduced speed limits aren’t suggestions—they’re the law.
- Put your phone away. Using a handheld device in an active school zone can land you a ticket and cost someone their life.
- Yield to pedestrians and cyclists. The Lisa Torry Smith Act makes it a felony to seriously injure someone in a crosswalk.
- Only drop off and pick up in designated areas. Don’t stop in the middle of the road.
Let’s Not Forget About School Buses
- Never pass a bus with red flashing lights or an extended stop sign. That applies to both directions unless there’s a median in between.
- Keep your distance. Buses make frequent stops, and kids can be unpredictable.
- Violating bus laws can cost you up to $1,250—even for a first offense.
If your kids are walking or biking to school, remind them to use sidewalks, make eye contact with drivers before crossing, and always wear a helmet. And of course—no texting and walking!
Bottom line, Lubbock: slowing down and staying alert could save a life. Let’s keep our school zones safe and start this year on the right foot…
