Texans don’t mess around when it comes to naming their pets—and here in Lubbock, we take it personally. A new study from TrustedHousesitters just dropped the list of the most popular pet names in Texas for 2025, and it’s clear that the Hub City has its own flair when it comes to naming Fido or Fluffy.

Heck, I was born and raised here and my black lab is Mattie (as in Mattie the Matador–a nod to my beloved Red Raiders. My late Great Dane was named Doc Holiday, because…why not. I also have two indoor cats: George and Wheezy. And I have two outside cats: Bruce Lee and Princess Consuela Bananahammock. All strong names, if you ask me!
The Top Picks (No Surprise Here)
Just like everywhere else in America, classics like Luna, Charlie, Lucy, Bella, and Daisy dominate the list. If you’re yelling “Luna!” at the Tech Terrace dog park, don’t be surprised if three different pups come running your way.
Other all-time faves in the Texas top 20 include Oliver, Max, Rosie, Jack, Buddy, Bailey, Cooper, and Milo. Nothing shocking there—but let’s be real, these names are basically the “John” and “Mary” of the dog world.
Where Lubbock Goes Full-Texas
Here’s where it gets good: the study also revealed the most Texan-inspired pet names, and it reads like a list of your aunts and uncles from Lamesa.
I’m talking Dallas, Austin, Dolly, Waylon, Willie, and Ranger—all of which would fit in just fine at a Red Raider tailgate. And of course, leave it to Texans to name their pets after snacks. Yep, Nacho, Queso, and Chili all made the list. Don’t be surprised if you hear someone hollering “Chili, get back here!” while eating an ACTUAL bowl of chili…with NO BEANS!
