Foster Care Challenges: Preparing Kids For School In Lubbock

Back-to-school season is here across the South Plains. For most kids, it’s backpacks, new sneakers, and a little excitement mixed with nerves. But for children in foster care, this time of year can feel more uncertain than exciting. Switching schools, adjusting to new homes, and not knowing who will be in their corner can turn the start of school into one more challenge. That’s where CASA of the South Plains steps in. And right now, they’re asking for Lubbock’s help.

Two Ways to Make a Big Difference

CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is calling on folks in the 806 to show up for kids in foster care in two major ways:

  • Become a Hero for Hope – a monthly donor who helps provide stability and advocacy year-round. CASA has set a goal to recruit 50 new Heroes for Hope by December 31.

  • Volunteer as a CASA Advocate – trained advocates who stand up for kids in court, in school, and in everyday life, making sure their needs and voices don’t get lost in the shuffle.

Jaclyn Morris, CASA’s CEO, put it best:

Every child deserves to walk into school feeling safe, supported, and seen. When our community comes together as Heroes for Hope and Volunteer Advocates, we create that reality. But we can’t do it alone.

CASA’s Impact Right Here in the South Plains

Last year, CASA served 375 children across six counties: Cochran, Hale, Hockley, Lubbock, Terry, and Yoakum. Their 219 volunteers donated more than 7,200 hours—a contribution valued at nearly $400,000 in taxpayer savings. Most importantly, 89 children in foster care found permanency with CASA’s help.

    How Lubbock Can Step Up

    • Volunteer: Become a CASA Advocate and help change a child’s story.

    • Donate: Join Heroes for Hope, starting at just $10 a month.

    • Host: Bring CASA to your business or organization for a quick CASA 101 session.

    Final Word

Kids in foster care across the South Plains deserve more than just supplies for the school year. They deserve hope, stability, and a community that’s got their back…
