How did the South Plains Fair get its start?

LUBBOCK, Texas — The South Plains Fair is close to making its annual return, with festivities getting underway next Friday, September 19 and lasting until September 27.

The fair is a mainstay of Lubbock culture, bringing the surrounding communities to the Hub City for food, rides and a celebration of life on the South Plains. Despite its popularity, many do not know why the fair happens every year or why it was started in the first place.

Lubbock’s annual Pumpkin Trail needs sponsors, hosts and volunteers

According to its website, the South Plains Fair made its debut in 1914, with the goal to “strengthen community ties within our region and promote growth and prosperity throughout Lubbock and its surrounding communities.” At this first fair, farmers from around the region would compare crops and share tips on how to farm in the West Texas climate. This spectacle would grow into an annual tradition and would reach far beyond agriculture to bring the South Plains together…
