Storm chances return Saturday

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – After a hot and calm week, an approaching storm system is about to shake things up this weekend, bringing gusty winds, increasing clouds, and possible thunderstorms.

High clouds are already filtering in as an approaching upper-level storm system moves closer to our region.

You may notice cirrus clouds and a steady south breeze hanging on overnight. Those winds will keep our lows warmer, dipping into the upper 60s.

Saturday, that trough moves closer to Texas. Winds higher up in the atmosphere are expected to shift, coming out of the southwest. This shift helps air on the ground rise more easily while the southerly breeze continues to pump in moisture from the Gulf of Mexico into our western counties.

By late morning and early afternoon, storms could pop up west of I-27 along the Texas/New Mexico state line where the air is more humid. While the risk for severe weather is low, a few stronger cells could produce gusty winds, small hail, and heavy rain.

Overall, temperatures will still reach the upper 80s and low 90s, but skies will be cloudier and winds noticeably stronger, with gusts of 20 mph or more possible in the afternoon.

By Saturday evening, the storm system aloft will strengthen and draw even more moisture into the region. This will expand storm chances across most of the area overnight.

Lubbock, Plainview and Matador can expect the chance of late-night rumbles of thunder, flashes of lightning, and locally heavy rainfall into the early morning hours of Sunday…
