Murder charge dropped for Dazaun Jones in deadly shooting at Lubbock afterhours club

LUBBOCK, Texas — Dazaun Jones, 19, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to Deadly Conduct by Discharging a Firearm in connection with the 2024 shooting at an afterhours club south of Lubbock that took the life of Dalequavion Barnard York, 17. The rest of his charges, including Murder, were dismissed. Jones was sentenced to three years in prison.

Byron Hawkins, Jr., 22, Christen Nelson, 23, Joshua Price, 27, and Lavarius Scott, 19, were also each initially charged with Deadly Conduct Discharging a Firearm. Jones, Nelson, Price and Scott all faced charges of Aggravated Assault Mass Shootings, and several other charges. Jones was the only one charged with murder at the time.

EverythingLubbock.com previously reported the shooting happened just before 3:00 a.m. on August 25, 2024, in the 9200 block of Highway 87. Several people had been shot when first responders got to the scene. At least five people suffered gunshot wounds.

Video of the shooting showed Hawkins, Scott and Jones arrive in a vehicle together, walk in and split up. Court documents said Jones and Scott were seen shooting into a crowd of people, specifically in the direction of Nelson and York. Court records said video showed York firing a gun.
