Lubbockites share their story to celebrate Hispanic Heritage

LUBBOCK, Texas — Three individuals shared their backgrounds and explained how their Hispanic culture influenced their lives and careers.

Jon Mark BernalJon Mark Bernal grew up in Anson, TX with his sister and parents. His father went to work out of high school, while his mother worked as a teacher’s aide before deciding to go to college. Bernal spent much of his younger years with his grandparents while his parents were busy. He said his grandparents were primarily the ones who taught him Spanish when he stayed with them after school. When Bernal completed eighth grade, his parents moved their family to Austin.

“It wasn’t until I was much older that I realized the reason my parents wanted to move my sister and I to a bigger city was to afford some better opportunities for us,” Bernal said…
