Several Cold Fronts Passing Through

LUBBOCK, TX (KLBK) – KLBK Chief Meteorologist Jacob Riley has your Thursday night weather update for October 16, 2025.

Tonight: Partly cloudy. Breezy. Low of 60°. Winds S 15-20 MPH.Tomorrow: Mostly clear. Warm. Isolated shower(s). High of 89°. Winds SW 10-15 MPH.

TONIGHT:

A mostly clear sky will remain around eastern New Mexico and western Texas tonight through Friday morning. Winds will remain on the breezy side, with southerly speeds sustained at 15-20 MPH. As a cold front approaches the area, our pressure gradient will strengthen, which is what’s responsible for the gustier nature of winds overnight. Temperatures will bottom out anywhere from the low 50s to low 60s by sunrise on Friday. Warmest temperatures will remain over the lower elevations of the Rolling Plains, located to the east and southeast of Lubbock.

FRIDAY:

As a weak ‘cold’ front pushes through the region on Friday, we may see a few showers or storms develop across the Rolling Plains. Only up to 10% coverage of rainfall is expected. It will be warm and dry for most of us, with high temperatures ranging from the low 80s over northwestern locations to the low 90s for eastern areas. We will see a mostly clear to partly cloudy sky across the region, with winds out of the southwest around 10-15 MPH. Shower and storms will have the highest likelihood of occurring from 4-8 PM. Overnight, we will remain dry with a few passing clouds. Winds will shift to the northwest around 10-15 MPH. Lows will cool into the mid 40s to upper 50s by sunrise on Saturday.

We could see a few early morning showers on Saturday over southern and southeastern areas, with all rain activity exiting southeastern areas by Noon. Morning lows will dip to their lowest points so far this year by sunrise on Sunday. Widespread 30s and 40s are likely, with places like Muleshoe and Friona possibly seeing their first freeze of the season! EXTENDED FORECAST:

As our next strong cold front approaches on Monday, we will see another day of compressional heating, resulting in high temperatures reaching the 80s and 90s. Winds will also be gustier due to the increasing pressure gradient, with sustained speeds of 18-22 MPH expected to be accompanied by gusts upwards of 40 MPH. As the cold front passes through Monday night into Tuesday morning, winds will shift to the north from the west and calm to speeds of 12-18 MPH. We will wake up to temperatures in the 40s and 50s, followed by daytime highs in the 60s and 70s under a partly cloudy sky! More seasonal temperatures will hang around through the remainder of the extended forecast period. Highs stay in the 70s to low 80s, with morning lows in the 40s and 50s. A few upper 30s will be possible over northwestern areas. Aside from some stray showers on Wednesday, we should remain dry. Be sure to use extra caution with any outdoor activities that could result in a spark. Drought conditions have returned to the region, and our wildfire potential will remain at a moderate to high threshold.
