LUBBOCK, Texas — October 31st marks the day for kids of all ages to dress up as someone spooky, a strong superhero or a giant T-rex for Halloween! Most accidents that happen on this night can be preventable from both pedestrians and vehicle operators.
Here at EverythingLubbock.com we have come up with some simple tricks and reminders to ensure a safe night of Trick-or-Treating.
Teal is the new pumpkin color this year
- Glow Sticks: The use of colorful glow sticks can help drivers and parents help keep an eye out for children that are wearing dark clothing or on those not well lit streets. Tip: look for bright lights or flashing gadgets that go with the costumes to make it more fun!
- Parents/Guardians: Please note what your child is wearing and vice versa, in case there is a situation where you are separated, finding each other can be easier. Especially in large crowds, this day is the best day to stand out! Tip: wearing a costume or bright colors can help your child and drivers see you in the dark.
- Walking: It is always a good idea to be aware of your surroundings and know where you are walking. Always remember to look both ways before crossing the street and hold hands with your child to ensure their safety. Tip: It is best that you DO NOT let them run into the street.
- Driving: For drivers that are in residentials streets when trick-or-treats are starting to go out please be cautious and drive a little slower and make sure your headlights are on, in case pedestrians can see you but you can not see them. Tip: always follow street signs and make complete stops.
- Buddy System: For those who have larger families or have friends joining them, the buddy system is a great way to make sure everyone is accounted for throughout the night. Tip: have the older buddy be paired with the younger buddy so that they can learn from the older buddy on how to stay safe.
- Plan of Action: For those who might be heading away from their neighborhood and heading to a new one, it would be best to drive the night before so that you and your children can know where they will be walking. Tip: always best to be familiar with an unfamiliar place especially once it gets dark and visibility gets low.
