Fatal crash in Portales leads to DWI charges for driver

LUBBOCK, Texas–On the morning of Saturday, October 18, 2025, at 8:00 a.m., officers from the Portales Police Department responded to a reported motor vehicle crash with injuries at the intersection of 1st Street and Chicago Avenue.

Upon arrival officers found two vehicles that had been involved, and all occupants of the vehicles were transported to Roosevelt General Hospital for their injuries. The driver of one vehicle was a 60-year-old female, Monica Diaz, of Portales, who later succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.

The driver of the other vehicle, 25-year-old Sebastian Torres Gonzales of Portales, was transported to a Lubbock area hospital for his injuries. An arrest warrant has been issued for Torres Gonzales on multiple charges including homicide by vehicle resulting from Driving While Intoxicated…
