“Let’s Not Risk Penalizing Our Team”: Texas Tech Says Goodbye to Tortilla Tossing

Texas Tech Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt on Monday announced the Red Raiders would no longer allow fans to throw tortillas at Jones AT&T Stadium, bringing an end to a tradition that has defined game days in West Texas for more than three decades.

The decision comes after the Big 12 Conference tightened enforcement of its policy against throwing objects onto the field, leaving Texas Tech facing $25,000 in fines following violations during their homecoming victory over Kansas.

The enforcement will begin with reminders at stadium gates, where fans will be asked to discard any tortillas before entering. Those who ignore the warnings and toss tortillas during the game will lose access to all sporting events through the end of the season…
