Lubbock restaurant owner opens home and kitchen to serve those struggling during government shutdown

LUBBOCK, Texas — Jay Scholz is a local restaurant owner of Yanagi, Hayashi Buffet and Hayashi Midtown. Lately, he has taken off his business owner hat and has just been a concerned neighbor. With everything uncertain in the world during this time the government is shutdown, he said he knew he needed to do something to help.

“It’s not always an easy ask, but it’s always easier to offer. We were sitting down one night, my daughter and I, and we were just talking about how it would be a great thing to start back up and just help the community that has always helped us,” Scholz said.

Last week, he made a post on Facebook announcing he would be purchasing groceries and cooking hot meals for those in need completely free of charge. He also said this is not the first time he has opened his home or kitchen to those in need.
