I used to feel the heart-swell of joy at Christmas trees, lights, and ornaments. Now, for me, these displays are a sea of plastic that evokes only a nauseating dread. I’ve had several bad Christmases in a row, and for myself and many like me, the smiling families and friends on cards and packages remind me of what I’ve lost.
Of course, that attitude is ungrateful and myopic. I have so much! I have a family that loves me, wonderful friends, and a lovely home. Why can’t that be my focus during the holidays? A feeling of gratitude for being so abundantly blessed should surely have me misty-eyed next to the Christmas tree. But again, there’s only void, blankness, perhaps slight disdain. I think of everyone who is barely getting by, barely feeding themselves this year, and I am repulsed by the ribbons, the tags, the packages, the boxes, and bags.
Why am I telling you this? In case you feel the same way. I want you to know you’re not alone, you aren’t a bad person, and that many feel the way you do, even if they are experts at hiding it.
When Holidays Don’t Feel Like Holidays
Some people are grieving a loss. Some are all alone. Some are exhausted from working extra to pay for the holidays, or incredibly stressed that they won’t be able to maintain what is expected for gifts, decorations, meals, etc. Some are despondent at the dark and the cold. Those feelings are valid. There is nothing wrong with those people.
You’re Not the Only One Feeling This Way
Across Lubbock, countless people quietly deal with stress, loneliness, or emotional burnout during the holidays. Even though social media makes it seem like everyone is living inside a Hallmark movie, the reality is that many are navigating complex, challenging emotions right alongside you.
