Iconic Buddy Holly Memorial in Texas To Be Removed: ‘This Is a Shame’

Buddy Holly fans are calling it “the day the music died” all over again.

It was recently announced that the famous crosswalk in Lubbock, Tex., inspired by Holly’s recognizable glasses, is set to be removed as the result of new government orders.

Texas Will Remove Crosswalk Depicting Buddy Holly’s Iconic Glasses

The crosswalk features four giant pairs of glasses resembling the ones famously worn by Holly, who hailed from Lubbock, Tex. It was installed by the city in 2020 near the Buddy Holly Center downtown to celebrate the late rock and roll legend, who died in a plane crash on Feb. 3, 1959 at the age of 22. He was killed alongside fellow musicians Ritchie Valens and J.P. “Big Bopper” Richardson on what is now referred to as “the day the music died,” as sung in Don McLean‘s “American Pie.”

Per NBCNews, the decision to remove the Holly memorial comes after Lubbock received a letter from the Texas Department of Transportation threatening to withdraw state or federal funding for road projects if the roadway artwork was not removed in accordance with a new directive from Texas Gov. Greg Abbott
