Here’s where my “perfect” road trip started.
I recently visited my friends at Smokin’ Dick’s BBQ in Post. There’s nothing quite like great barbeque paired with even greater company. They were having a busy day and were completely sold out of dessert, which honestly worked out fine because I’d already planned to double up by swinging through The Slaton Bakery on my way back home.
Let’s pause here: if you’re coming from Lubbock, you’re looking at about a 22-minute drive to The Slaton Bakery. Folks in Lubbock are spoiled — we get cranky about driving across town — but 22 minutes is absolutely nothing. Sometimes it just feels good to get outside city limits, roll the windows down, and hit the road for something delicious.
Now, back to The Slaton Bakery. Mention them online and three things always pop up immediately: vanilla wafers, banana pudding, and thumbprint cookies. Don’t get me wrong — those are legendary — but they barely scratch the surface of what this bakery does. The place is absolutely stacked with cookies, cakes, pastries, candies, and a whole lineup of local Texas products and souvenirs you didn’t even know you needed…
