Sick geese at McAllister Park test positive for Avian Flu, Wildlife Center warns public

LUBBOCK, Texas — Wildlife experts are urging Lubbock residents to avoid sick or dead geese at McAllister Park after several birds tested positive for Avian Flu.

Sarah Hollers, executive director of the South Plains Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, said the center has already received multiple geese showing neurological symptoms. Some were tested earlier this month and confirmed positive for avian influenza.

“This year we’re just seeing a lot of sick geese,” Hollers said. “We’ve already had a few tested that came into our facility a few weeks ago, and they did come back positive for avian flu.”

Hollers said the illness is extremely contagious among birds and can also be transmitted to dogs, cats and humans. The virus spreads through eye, nose and mouth secretions, making close contact with infected birds risky…
