One Day of Winter, Six Days of Spring

LUBBOCK, TX (KLBK) – KLBK Chief Meteorologist Jacob Riley has your Friday night weather update for December 12, 2025.

Tonight: Mostly clear. Low of 33°. Winds NE→SW 5-10 MPH.Tomorrow: Mostly clear. Strong P.M. cold front. High of 77°. Winds SW→NE 15-20 MPH.

TONIGHT:

A chilly night will fall on the KLBK forecast area tonight into Saturday morning. After a weak cold front moved through the region earlier today, winds have shifted to the northeast. These will calm overnight and shift back to the southwest by sunrise on Saturday. Sustained speeds will only be around 5-10 MPH. We will keep a mostly clear sky across the forecast area. When combined with calm winds, these two ingredients result in efficient radiational cooling! Lows will fall into the upper 20s to mid 30s across the region, with northeastern areas likely seeing the coldest temperatures! Be sure to bring in your pets and plants sensitive to the cold!

SATURDAY:

A warm and windy Saturday is expected across eastern New Mexico and western Texas! A strong cold front will enter the region after lunch. Ahead of the front, compressional heating of our atmosphere will allow high temperatures to soar into the 70s, with possibly even a few low 80s possible! Here in Lubbock, the current forecast calls for us to come within 2 degrees of our record high temperature of 79 degrees that was set back in 1921! Strong southwesterly winds sustained at 15-20 MPH will shift back to the northeast around 2-4 PM as our cold front arrives. Gusts as high as 40 MPH could kick up some patchy blowing dust around the region. Colder air will filter in once the front passes, with lows plummeting into the upper 10s to low 30s by sunrise on Sunday. Coldest temperatures will remain over northern areas.

SHORT TERM FORECAST:

A much colder day will occur Sunday, with high temperatures only rebounding into the 30s and 40s around the region! We’ll see a mix of a partly to mostly cloudy sky with winds out of the northeast around 12-18 MPH. Winds will shift to the southwest later in the day, with clouds hanging around overnight. Lows will cool into the 20s and 30s by sunrise on Monday. Southwesterly winds around 12-18 MPH on Monday will allow temperatures to warm quite efficiently, with highs returning to the upper 50s and 60s. No precipitation is expected through the short term.

EXTENDED FORECAST:

As we head into the last week before Christmas, temperatures are expected to remain above average! Highs will vary from the low 60s to upper 70s, with morning lows in the 30s and 40s. Another record high temperature will be in jeopardy on Wednesday! We will be monitoring for the potential of a stronger cold front and cooler air on Thursday. Right now, there is a lot of uncertainty with the forecast for that time frame, so don’t be surprised to see some big swings in the temperature forecast over the next few days. Breezy conditions will remain with sustained wind speeds of 10-20 MPH occasionally accompanied by gusts as high as 30-40 MPH! Some patchy blowing dust will be possible.
