Lubbock Animal Services Has a Message Every Pet Owner Should See

Lubbock Animal Services is reminding residents about the city’s leash law after sharing a recent post on its official Facebook page. The reminder serves as an important message for pet owners across the city, emphasizing safety, responsibility, and compliance with local ordinances.

What Lubbock’s Leash Law Requires

Under Lubbock’s leash law, dogs are required to be on a leash when outside of a secure, enclosed area. This includes neighborhoods, parks, streets, and other public spaces. The law is designed to protect not only pets, but also people, other animals, and Animal Services staff who respond to calls involving loose dogs.

Why Animal Services Is Emphasizing the Leash Law

Because Lubbock is so extremely bad at following it, which is frustrating for many of us. I’ve had to stop walking my dog because there is always a loose dog in someone’s yard or at the park (don’t even get me started on people leaving dog doo everywhere, too).

Some people think their dog is a special angel that shouldn’t have to follow the rules; however, my dog is reactive. If your dog looks at her, she’ll bark. That’s led to loose “good” dogs running across the street (so they could have gotten hit by a car) and dogs running up on my dog and me. Here’s the thing: my dog is on a leash- guess who is getting in trouble if one of the dogs bites the other or me? Hint: It’s not my dog or me.

How Leash Law Compliance Helps Pets and People

Keeping dogs leashed helps protect everyone involved. Leashed dogs are less likely to run into traffic, approach unfamiliar animals, or startle someone who may be afraid of dogs. It also helps prevent dogs from becoming lost or picked up by Animal Services unnecessarily…
