LUBBOCK, Texas — Students at Idalou Elementary School are used to looking up to their principal, but lately, they have had to look all the way to the roof.
Principal Amy Estrada traded her office chair for a spot on the school’s roofline last week, wearing a full “Elf on the Shelf” costume to greet students during the morning carpool.
The stunt, which Estrada called a “magical surprise,” was to boost morale and attendance as the school heads into the final days before Christmas break.

“I would see windows rolled down, moms leaning out taking pictures and videoing, and the kids were just lighting up,” Estrada said. “Their faces lit up. It was awesome.”…
