From Record Heat to Arctic Cold

LUBBOCK, TX (KLBK) – KLBK Chief Meteorologist Jacob Riley has your Wednesday night weather update for December 24, 2025.

Tonight: Patchy dense fog. Low of 45°. Winds SW 8-12 MPH.Tomorrow: Partly cloudy. Breezy. Record heat. High of 82°. Winds SW→W 15-20 MPH.

TONIGHT:

Another warmer than average night is in store for the KLBK forecast area on this Christmas Eve! Lows will only cool into the upper 30s over northwestern areas to the mid 50s over southeastern locations. We will have more fog along and south of the Highway 62/82 corridor, resulting in visibility at or below 0.25 miles at times. Be sure to take it slow if you plan on traveling early Christmas morning! Winds will be light out of the southwest, sustained at 8-12 MPH.

THURSDAY:

Christmas Day 2025 is expected to go down as the hottest in Lubbock’s recorded history! Highs will peak in the mid 70s to mid 80s across the region, which is 20-30 degrees above average for this time of year! Winds will be breezy out of the southwest, becoming more westerly throughout the day. Sustained speeds of 15-20 MPH will be accompanied by gusts as high as 25-35 MPH. Some patchy blowing dust will be possible. Above average temperatures will remain Thursday night into Friday morning, as lows only settle into the upper 30s to mid 50s once again.

SHORT TERM FORECAST:

Record breaking heat will remain as we head into the weekend. Highs will continue to peak in the mid 70s to mid 80s. Lubbock is expected to set two more record highs on Friday and Saturday. Morning lows will remain in the upper 30s to low 50s. Winds will mainly be out of the west, sustained at 10-20 MPH. Dry conditions will remain through the short term forecast period, with rather benign weather continuing.

EXTENDED FORECAST:

A strong cold front will sweep through the South Plains Saturday night into Sunday morning. Highs will only peak in the 50s and 60s on Sunday, followed by the 30s and 40s on Monday. We will gradually warm Tuesday and Wednesday, with temperatures returning to above average levels for the last day of 2025! Morning lows will be the coldest Monday and Tuesday mornings, with wind chill values as low as the lower 10s at times. We could see a light wintry mix with this front, especially Sunday night into Monday morning. No major impacts are expected at this time.
