Unusually Warm Winter Conditions Are Being Felt Across Lubbock

Lubbock is experiencing an unusually warm winter this season, with temperatures frequently climbing above what residents typically expect during the colder months. While cold fronts and freezes are still possible, current weather patterns have resulted in extended stretches of milder conditions across the South Plains.

How This Winter Compares to Normal in Lubbock

The National Weather Service has described several days this Winter as “unseasonably warm.” In fact, we’ve broken temperature records on three days since Winter officially began on December 21st:

  • Dec 22: Reached 85°F, breaking an all-time monthly record.
  • Dec 23: New record high of 84°F (old record 80°F from 1955/1964).
  • Christmas Day (Dec 25): All-time December record high of 86°F (previous daily was 76°F from 1955). Not only did we break this record, but we also shattered it.

“Normal” can be a little difficult to quantify in a place with such unpredictable weather; however, we can say that historically, the average highs during Lubbock winters are between 50 and 60 degrees. The 80s are obviously way higher than that average.

What It Means for Lubbock Residents

The most immediate concern of warmer winter weather is that it can cause fire conditions in our area. So please exercise extra caution with anything flammable outdoors. We also get plenty of wind this time of year, too, so the spread of a fire is a huge concern.

Additionally, you may be turning on the air conditioner when you normally wouldn’t. Depending on how much your electricity costs vs. your gas (if you have a gas heater), it may make this season a little more expensive.

Also, you might just miss your sweaters and heavy coats- mine have been collecting dust in my closet…
