Fire started by inmate at Lubbock County Detention Center

LUBBOCK, Texas–An affidavit obtained by EverythingLubbock.com revealed that Mauro Castillo, 49, an inmate of the Lubbock County Detention Center set his cell on fire.

Castillo was initially arrested on August 18, 2025, for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Burglary of Habitation and Parole Violation.

On January 4, 2026, a deputy was dispatched to the Lubbock County Detention Center upon arrival and further investigation showed that Castillo ignited his county issued mattress and started a fire in his cell. Castillo started the fire while being interviewed on camera.

Castillo is now being charged with arson and is being held at the Lubbock County Detention Center with a bond of $50,000…
