Isolated Storms and Snow Flurries Returning

LUBBOCK, TX (KLBK) – KLBK Chief Meteorologist Jacob Riley has your Tuesday night weather update for January 6, 2026.

Tonight: Partly cloudy. Low of 40°. Winds SW 8-12 MPH.Tomorrow: Mostly cloudy. High of 76°. Winds SW 15-20 MPH.

TONIGHT:

Clouds will hang out with us across eastern New Mexico and western Texas tonight through Wednesday morning. Partly to mostly cloudy sky conditions will persist, with winds out of the southwest sustained at 8-12 MPH. Temperatures will flirt with freezing over northwestern locations. The rest of us will bottom out in the mid 30s to mid 40s by sunrise on Wednesday!

WEDNESDAY:

Despite an increase in cloud coverage, temperatures are still expected to soar well above average on Wednesday! Under a mostly cloudy sky, temperatures are forecast to peak in the upper 60s to low 80s across the KLBK forecast area. The coolest temperatures will remain over northwestern locations. Winds will be noticeably breezier, sustained out of the southwest around 15-20 MPH. Gusts as high as 30 MPH are expected. Showers and storms will begin to increase after sunset across eastern New Mexico. This activity will quickly spread to the east after midnight. A few storms will be on the strong to severe side. Damaging wind gusts as high as 60 MPH and hail up to quarter sized (1.00″ in diameter) will be the primary concerns. Honestly not expecting too much severe activity, but a non-zero threat does exist. Lows will fall into the 40s to low 50s, and some areas could see as much as 0.25″ of rainfall! Most locations will see less than 0.10″, if any rainfall at all.

SHORT TERM FORECAST:

By the time the sun rises on our Thursday morning, showers and storms will have exited our region. Wall to wall sunshine will return for the rest of the day, with a few more clouds increasing during the evening hours. High temperatures will peak in the 60s to low 70s around the region, with winds out of the west-southwest sustained at 18-22 MPH. Gusts as high as 40 MPH are expected, and could kick up some patchy blowing dust. Colder air will filter in behind the cold front Thursday night into Friday morning. Low temperatures will fall into the upper 20s to low 40s across the region. By sunrise on Friday, wrap around moisture associated with the upper level pressure system will provide some light rain and snow showers across the Texas Panhandle and northern South Plains! No major snow accumulations look likely at this point in time. However, a light dusting will be possible over northern locations. High temperatures will peak in the 40s and 50s under a partly cloudy sky. Winds will remain strong, shifting to the north-northwest. Sustained speeds of 18-22 MPH will be accompanied by gusts as high as 45 MPH. Again, some patchy blowing dust will be possible. Liquid precipitation amounts should remain below 0.10″, with locations along and north of Highway 70 having the best chance of seeing any activity.
