Sketching a second chance: Lubbock inmate uses art to escape the walls

LUBBOCK, Texas — Marc Lopez spent most of his life believing he could only draw stick figures. Now, at 40 years old and sitting behind bars at the Lubbock County Jail, his hands are doing something much more complex; they are sketching their way toward a new life.

Lopez, who is serving a four-month sentence for a probation violation involving drug possession, recently traded the chaos of the jail dayroom for charcoal pencils and watercolor pads. The results were more than therapeutic; they were award-winning.
