Most Car Thefts in Texas Don’t Happen at Home, New Data Shows

Many drivers assume their vehicle is most at risk when parked at home, but new data suggests that assumption may be false. A five-year analysis from Compare the Market shows that most car thefts in Texas occur while vehicles are parked away from a residence during everyday activities.

Over the past five years, Texas recorded 491,974 reported vehicle thefts, based on data from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting program. Of those thefts, 35 percent occurred at a residence or home, while 65 percent happened when vehicles were parked elsewhere. The breakdown closely mirrors national trends.
