Ski Mountaineering makes Winter Olympics debut

BORMIO, Italy (KCBD) – Ski mountaineering, also known around the world as “Skimo” can be seen as a winter rendition of the triathlon. The sport involves uphill skiing, uphill climbing, and concludes with a downhill slalom run. Thursday, it was contested as an Olympic sport for the first time in history.

At the Stelvio Ski Centre, Spain made an unexpected medal haul and won gold for the first time since the Sapporo Games of 1972 when Oriol Cardona Coll crossed the finish line in the men’s sprint (2:34.03) and fellow Spaniard Ana Alonso Rodriguez earned bronze in the women’s sprint. Marianne Fatton of Switzerland won gold (2:59.77).

As for the United States, Anna Gibson (Jackson, Wyo.) and Cameron Smith (Crested Butte, Colo.) both advanced to the semifinals, but were eliminated…
