Man arrested after 1 shot, 1 assaulted on Easter at Mackenzie Park

LUBBOCK, Texas — The Lubbock Police Department confirmed that one person was arrested after two people were injured on Easter Sunday evening at Mackenzie Park.

LPD officers arrived at the intersection of Parkway and Cesar E. Chavez Drives around 7:20 p.m. for a civil disturbance. Once they arrived, they found 19-year-old Coby Gonzalez with a gunshot to his hand. He was transported by EMS to UMC for treatment for his minor injuries.

Man accused of sexually assaulting 5-year-old

The initial investigation revealed that 40-year-old Margarito Sarmiento got in a verbal altercation with an unnamed individual. During this argument, Sarmiento reportedly hit another person, Romana Cuellar, 39, in the face. According to police, Sarmiento later pulled out a firearm at some point during the incident and accidently shot Gonzalez, who was a bystander, in the hand.

Following the incident, Sarmiento was arrested and booked into the Lubbock County Detention Center on two charges of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Assault Causes Bodily Injury. His bond was set at $45,000 and was later placed into a detainer by Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE)…
