TTUHSC School of Pharmacy and Texas Panhandle Poison Center host medication cleanout

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) —  Students and faculty from the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Jerry H. Hodge School of Pharmacy and the Texas Panhandle Poison Control celebrated the 100th Medication Cleanout this weekend.

Officials said, “Medication Clean Out is a program of the Poison Center. So our goal really is to prevent poisonings, prevent misuse, while protecting the environment. So people can clean after medicine cabinets today, anything that they’re not using,” explained Ronica Farrar, Texas Panhandle Poison Center program manager. “Whether it’s expired or not, really, but if it’s expired, definitely get rid of it. But if you’re not using it, bring it to us, and we’ll take care of it for you.”

This event is not only a way for residents to dispose of their medication but also a way for local medical students to learn and interact with the community.

A lot of patients may just be unaware of how to get rid of these medications,” explained Taylor Lee, TTUHSC Jerry H. Hodge School of Pharmacy student. “They may just have extra ones, and it’s dangerous for them to throw them out.”…
