16 teams Texas Tech might schedule to replace NC State in 2027

Texas Tech learned recently that NC State was backing out of its road trip to Lubbock, and will be buying out the contract for the 2027 non-conference game. The Red Raiders elected to pull out of its agreement to play North Texas in Denton in 2027 after the NC State decision, leaving the Red Raiders two open dates (9/11, 9/18) to fill for the non-conference in 2027.

The Red Raiders have announced that they are efforting to find a replacement power 4 team to replace NC State on the schedule. We’re trying to piece together the puzzle to figure out which Power 4 team the Red Raiders could square off with in 2027.

These are the Power 4 Teams that have not filled their full allotment of non-conference games in the 2027 season:

Big Ten:

  • Michigan State
  • Rutgers
  • USC
  • Washington

SEC:

  • Alabama
  • Arkansas
  • Georgia
  • LSU
  • Ole Miss
  • Vanderbilt

ACC:

  • Cal
  • Miami
  • SMU
  • Stanford
  • Virginia

Other:

  • Notre Dame

We’ll break it down in three categories: Most Likely, Possible, Not Very Likely. There are a number of factors that go into why we put teams in each category – on the likeliness Tech could land a game with them in 2027. The factors include: Whether or not a team has a non-conference Power 4 team on the schedule, if a team already has 6 home games that season, how much of a blue blood is the team, and if the team has an open date that lines up with one of Texas Tech’s two available dates (9/11, 9/18).
